The Basics:
Place: Hellhole Swamp
National Wilderness Area, Francis Marion
National Forest, Berkeley County, SC
Directions: Drive 6 miles north of
402/41 intersection near Huger (pronounced "hyoo-jee")
on Highway 41, turn right on Hellhole Road,
campground is 100 yards on right
Recommended Lodging: Holiday Inn
Express, Monk's Corner, SC
Recommended Camping: Hellhole
Campsite (primitive- no hook-ups or
facilities)
Bring: sunscreen, insect repellent,
food, drink (lots of water!), binoculars,
camera/camcorder, sturdy comfortable
footwear, lightweight light-colored clothes,
and a light jacket for evening.
The schedule: OK, part of the
beauty of snake hunting is to go wherever,
whenever, with no schedule. To make matters
more slack, we'll be in the Low Country
where the local lifestyle mandates that we
surrender to the "pall of lethargy" that
prevails over all.
All that being said, I guess we still need a
schedule. Here it is, the Hellhole '08
Agenda (NOTE: All times are tentative with
an "or whenever" implied):
Friday, May 23:
5:30 pm: Hotel guests depart
Holiday Inn Express, Monks Corner, having
already eaten or bringing their dinner along
6:00 pm: Hotel guests, campers, and
commuters rendezvous at the Hellhole
campground (there are directions somewhere
on this messageboard) Assign teams to guides
for the evening.
6:10-10:00pm? Road cruise and/or hike at
guides' discretion
Saturday, May 24:
7:30 am: Pre-fed hotel guests
depart for Hellhole
8:00 am: Hotel guests, campers, and
commuters rendezvous at the Hellhole
campground. Assign teams to guides for the
morning.
8:10-11:30 am: Road cruise and/or hike at
guides' discretion.
11:30 am-1:00 pm: Lunch, BBQ buffet in a
trailer
1:00-4:00 pm: Siesta
4:00 pm: Hotel guests depart for Hellhole,
with bring-your-own grillables, charcoal,
portable grills
4:30 pm: Hotel guests, campers, and
commuters rendezvous at the Hellhole
campground. Assign teams to guides for the
evening.
4:40 till 10-ish pm: Road cruise and/or hike
at guides' discretion.
10:00 pm-ish: cookout and fireside concert.
Sunday, May 25:
7:30 am: Pre-fed hotel guests
depart for Hellhole
8:00 am: Hotel guests, campers, and
commuters rendezvous at the Hellhole
campground. Assign teams to guides for the
morning.
8:10-11:30 am: Road cruise and/or hike at
guides' discretion.
Noonish: Siesta
5:00 pm: Hotel guests, campers, and
commuters rendezvous at the Hellhole
campground. Assign teams to guides for the
evening.
5:30 pm to Midnight: Those who chose to stay
in Hellhole, road cruise and/or hike at
guides' discretion. All others, depart for
Ghost Tour of SC’s haunted Low Country
(including perhaps a trip to Alice’s Grave?)
Monday, May 26:
